In a prior post, I discussed the benefits of Star Alliance Gold status, particularly highlighting the appealing advantage of airport lounge access. Since obtaining Gold status within the alliance may not be attainable for everyone, this article aims to present alternative methods to have exclusive airport lounge access for Belgians.
Airport lounges serve as comfortable spaces located within airports, usually situated between security checks and boarding gates. They offer travellers a place to unwind, enjoy complimentary food and beverages, and occasionally access shower facilities at no extra charge. Utilizing these lounges can significantly enhance the travel experience, reducing stress and providing a more enjoyable atmosphere while waiting for flights.
Differences in lounges
There are various kinds of airport lounges available for travelers. Airline lounges typically grant access to customers based on their loyalty status with a particular airline, which is often linked to an alliance. Additionally, passengers holding business class tickets from any airline within that alliance can also enjoy the lounge facilities.
Contract lounges operate under specific guidelines for entry. Many of these lounges permit access to individuals who either pay for entry or hold a subscription to lounge access programs like LoungeKey or PriorityPass, depending on the lounge’s policies. In the following sections, I will discuss different ways to access airport lounges without requiring airline status.
Bid for upgrade to your flight ticket
Many airlines offer the option to bid for an upgrade to business class. This way, you can enjoy the perks of business class travel at a lower cost, including priority boarding, access to airport lounges, and in some occasions increased luggage limits.
Many airlines utilize the “PlusGrade” system, which features a scrollbar for you to select your bid amount. I always advise people to start with the lowest bid possible unless they are keen on flying business class. There’s a good chance of securing an upgrade even with a minimal offer, unless the flight is overbooked. If that happens, even a higher bid may not guarantee an upgrade. The system often indicates a low probability of success, but this is mainly to encourage you to increase your offer in hopes of getting that upgrade.
Get the American Express Gold or Platinum card
The American Express Platinum card comes with a hefty price tag, costing 65 euro each month, but it offers numerous advantages for frequent travellers. I have created a blog post focused on maximizing the benefits of the Belgian American Express Platinum card. The benefits are listed below.
- Fast lane access at Brussels Airport
- Subscription for PriorityPass: access to >1300 airport lounges worldwide
- Several (travel) insurances
- Fine Hotels Booking platform allowing you to book very luxurious stays including room upgrades
A PriorityPass membership is available for an annual fee of 399 euros, which is included with this card. One of the standout features of the American Express Platinum card is the option to request an additional complimentary Platinum card for a family member, providing them with their own PriorityPass membership. This benefit effectively doubles the value of the membership to 798 euros.
Alternatively, the American Express Gold Card grants you 4 PriorityPass passes each year.
Alternatively, the American Express Gold Card offers a PriorityPass that allows you four times access to the lounge within their network.
